Ligament torn in shoulder?

I have hurt my shoulder 6 months ago and the pain has come and gone.last month its become unbearable! I went to the doctors x2 and hospital they all said a torn ligament.I've had an xray which shown no fracture.I'm having a scan on my shoulder tue.what will happen if there's a tear and should I be working?
